AAU basketball used to be about building players; now too many folks trying to build pockets. What started as a space for dreamers has turned into a business built on pressure, promises, and price tags. Every weekend, you see parents chasing opportunity while someone else counts the cash.
I’ve been around long enough to know not every coach is in it for the right reasons. Some programs still care about kids – teaching discipline, teamwork, and love for the game – but others? They care about logos, sponsors, and who’s on the flyer. The shift hit when money got bigger than mentorship.
The sad part is, parents can’t always tell the difference. They hear about scholarships, exposure, and “connections,” but nobody talks about how many of those dreams die on the road. The best programs don’t just get you seen; they make you ready. Until that becomes the standard again, the AAU system will keep selling dreams like they’re on discount.
